So AD&D was never built around the idea that every fight should be balanced, fair and “level appropriate”. This is one of the biggest, I guess shocks for modern players when they come to the table to play AD&D 1e. You could enter a dungeon, turn a corner, run into a monster that is more powerful then you and get your ass handed to you as you finally realize running was a better choice rather then rushing in like a superhero. The correct answer is in most cases is learn how to run and come back later with a better plan.

That is not bad design. That is the design.

In Gygax’s D&D, the world doesn’t bend to your level, the dungeon does not check your character sheet and says, “oh I better make sure this monster is on the same level as this guy..”. Wandering monsters do not care if the party is wounded, almost dead or running low on spells. The ogre in the next chamber does not step aside because the group needs one more easy encounter before bedtime.

That danger changes how you play.

You start asking better questions. Can we avoid it? Can we bribe it? Can we trap it? Can we turn it against something else? Can we get out before it sees us?

That is where AD&D shines. The fight is only one option, and sometimes its not the best option.

Reaction rolls matter because not every encounter has to become combat. Morale matters because not every enemy fights to the death. Wandering monsters matter because time has weight. Every torch burned, every door forced, every argument in the hallway creates risk.

That is why AD&D feels tense. The game does not promise safety. It promises consequence.

This is also why “unfair” encounters can create better stories. A balanced fight usually ends one way. You fight, spend resources, and win. A dangerous encounter forces choices. The party retreats. The thief scouts ahead. The cleric saves the last spell. The fighter blocks the passage while everyone else escapes. Those moments stick because the players know the danger was real.

AD&D teaches you to respect the dungeon. It teaches you that survival is a victory. Getting out alive with treasure, information, or even one recovered body can mean more than clearing every room.

That style is not for every table. Some players want balance. Some players want every encounter tuned to their party. That is fine. But AD&D plays by a different rule. The world is dangerous first. Fairness comes second, if it shows up at all.

And that is the point.

You are not supposed to win every fight.

You are supposed to learn which fights are worth having.

I will say it plain. AD&D is the gold standard of Dungeons and Dragons and will always be...

Not because it is perfect. It is not. Not because every rule is clean. Many are not. Not because it is easy to learn. It is not that either. It is the gold standard because it expected more from you.

AD&D did not hand you the answers to the test, it handed you a torch, a sword, a sack for coins, and a warning. The dungeon did not care about your feelings or how long of a backstory your character has. The wilderness had no level appropriate safe zones. Monsters were not balanced for your comfort. If you won a battle you earned it, or you learned to say, “oh shit! run!”.

Modern games often protect the player. AD&D respected the player enough to risk failure. There is a difference. Without the possibility of death lurking around every corner, victory means NOTHING. When resources matter, choices matter. When the dungeon can beat you, beating the dungeon feels an accomplishment. AD&D also treated the Dungeon Master like a creator of worlds a weaver of stories, not a referee trapped in a box, saying, “you can’t do that, the book doesn’t cover it”.

Open the Dungeon Masters Guide and you find tables, systems, rulings, advice, strange corners, treasure logic, city details, timekeeping, random encounters, hirelings, morale, disease, gods, planes, tricks, and danger. It is a workshop, not a pamphlet. It throws it all in your lap and says, “Make in your own!”

That book trusted you to think or assumed you had imagination enough to think.

AD&D trusted players too. It assumed you would map, negotiate and learn to run away when needed. It rewarded caution, nerve, and clever play.

That style creates stories people remember for years at the table.. hell I still quote a phrase we said in a game 20 years ago with my friend.

Nobody forgets carrying a cursed idol three sessions because greed beat common sense. Those stories are born from pressure.

AD&D also had weight. Classes felt different. A magic user at level 1 was fragile and scared. At high level, terrifying. Fighters held the line. Clerics were anchors. Thieves lived on nerve and timing. Advancement felt earned because it took time and risk.

Even the flaws became part of its identity.

Yes, some rules were annoying to deal with at time, so we removed them. Yes, some charts were odd. Yes, some rulings made you squint. But the game had teeth, personality, and conviction. It knew what it wanted to be.

It means the benchmark.

When people talk about danger, exploration, real campaign worlds, meaningful treasure, tense dungeon crawls, hard choices, and player skill, they keep circling back to AD&D. There is a reason for that.

It still casts a long shadow because it was built on something solid.

AD&D asked more of you.

And because it asked more, it gave more back.

How mean are White Dragons? That’s what this episode is about. We’re looking at the dragon itself, what makes it nasty, and how you can use one in your campaign without treating it like a big white lizard with wings.

White Dragons are not stupid animals. They are hunters. They track prey, wait for the right moment, and strike when the target is weak. They don’t need to charge into a fight just to prove they are dangerous. A White Dragon can watch a party from the snow, follow them for miles, and let the cold do half the work before it ever attacks.

That’s what makes them scary at the table. They live in places that already want to kill you. Frozen mountains. Ice caves. Snow buried valleys. Places where armor gets cold, torches struggle, food runs low, and every step costs effort. The dragon belongs there. The party does not.

So when you use a White Dragon, make the land part of the encounter. Let the snow hide tracks. Let the wind cover sound. Let the cold slow movement and punish bad choices. By the time the party sees the dragon, they should already feel like they walked into its hunting ground.

That’s when the White Dragon works best. It is not just a monster waiting in a room. It is the thing that has been watching from the ice the whole time.

I keep thinking about locked doors. Too many of them. Players start kicking them open after the first hour. They stop treating it like a risk. I want them to hesitate again.

Thinking. Could I make the door itself cursed?

Not a mimic. Just a door. It remembers who forces it. Weeks later something comes for them. Marked. Silent at first. A shadow at the edge of the torchlight.

I like the idea of a door that whispers a name. Only one player hears it. They probably won’t tell the others. That’s the hook. Little paranoia. They start wondering if they should leave the next door alone.

Thinking… a Fighter pushes the door. Fails the Strength check. Door says “No.” Just that. Quiet. Then opens anyway. Party moves on. That night the fighter keeps watch. He hears the same voice behind him. But nothing is there.

The darker part is the choice it offers me. I can wait. I can let the tension rot in the player’s mind. Or I can cash it in immediately for a fight. Both work. But slower is crueler. I want slower.

What if the party figures it out.? They start getting scared of touching doors.

But what if the curse spreads through objects?

Rope. Crowbars. They start running out of safe options. They have to decide. Open the next door or camp in the hall forever.

I need to decide how to signal the first consequence. Maybe a missing gear piece. Or a monster they swore they killed. Or a door that’s already closed behind them. I want them to know the dungeon saw them.

Not sure if it works long term. Might turn into paranoia that stops the session. Maybe the dungeon needs a mechanic for release. Like an offering. Burn some treasure. Bleed a little. Close a door properly. I like that. A ritual to ask forgiveness from doors.

I’ll try it next game..

As you may or may not be aware, I am the author of an OSR clone called Mazes & Perils, which was a clone of Holmes D&D, which won a Gold Ernie award. I followed up with Mazes & Perils Deluxe edition in 2016.

Over time, I released some new classes and ideas on my Patreon and through Drivethrurpg.

Today, I released a zine I hope to produce monthly, which will give GMs some ideas for their campaigns. It’s a small zine that was created by me with no AI. No AI art at all as well. I used icons from Games-Icons.net only. The simple front cover was designed in Photoshop and then in Canva. I have no real funds to hire an artist, and when I used AI, people complained. I could easily add AI art to help, but it’s probably just going to annoy people. So until I can afford to pay artists, it’s just going to be a simple zine to fit the simple old-school RPG I created.

I always loved the gelatinous cube. It’s straight to the point. Its a trap monster that eats the greedy and keeps your dungeons sparkling clean too!

Let’s think about this for a moment…

What does “floating” look like in the dark? Players with torches see glints, maybe shapes. If they carry lanterns, the light is steadier. I imagine a faint shimmer, like something just out of reach. Too clear, and they wise up. Too vague, and they ignore it. I would describe surfaces first. A shifting reflection. A gleam that moves when they move.

Second, timing. A cube only works if the party enters its space. It is slow. It needs the players to come to it. So the cave has to funnel them. A side passage, narrow and wet. Maybe something is chasing them deeper. Or something valuable lies behind the cube. Let them see the prize first.

I would not make it random loot. Give it a story hook. A knight’s armor. A wand that hums with stored light. Something worth stupid risk. If a player pokes it with a pole, the cube reacts. You are not hiding the danger forever. But you want the decision to feel earned.

So how clear is this cube?

That is always one thought that crosses my mind. In a dungeon situation, with torches, I would think it would be clear enough that the party wouldn’t realize it’s there and the front line would walk into it?

But normally cubes have things in them floating around, which would tip off the front line. WHAT I could do is put a suit of armor in the cube, against the wall. Which would make a party stop and investigate. Getting close up towards this armor, and start inspecting it. Which is when they get close enough I can hit them with the save. After that, the surprise is over, but it will be fun to try to nab one or two greedy players.

Ideas:

• Keep the cube between the players and what they want.

• Use narrow spaces to prevent easy avoidance.

• Give the treasure a name or small story.

• Roll for surprise on approach, not initial sight.

• Let players talk themselves into danger.

• Offer a dark out if they want to survive at a cost.

Empty Rooms Are Not Empty, a topic inspired by reading the AD&D Dungeon Master’s Design Kit book.

You walk into a room. Nothing moves. No monster. No treasure. So what is up with this?

A lot of DMs treat empty rooms are dead space, not giving it a second thought because it’s a room that can be easily skipped and that counts as a room for their adventure. I used to do that too. Roll the door, quick glance, move on. But that’s wasted table time.

An empty room is a lot more then just an empty room.

An empty room is information.

Dust on the floor tells you if someone passed through. Thick, undisturbed dust means no traffic. A single set of tracks means someone came in, but did not leave. Now the room matters. Now players slow down and start to question things.

Things that you can say with out saying…

Air.

Stale air means sealed. Moving air means openings. Drafts point to secret doors without saying it out loud. Players start testing walls. Now they are engaged.

Light.

A room that should be dark but is not, that raises questions. Where is the light coming from?

Sound.

A room that absorbs sound feels wrong. A room that echoes too much feels wrong.

Layout. Furniture pushed aside. A chair facing the wall.

You are not filling the room. You are setting a tone.

Here’s how you run it clean at the table.

• Give one strong detail, not five

• Let players react before adding more (this is very important, be reactionary)

• Tie the detail to a question, not an answer

• Use the room to point forward or backward (always use it to in a way that will be useful for things to come or something they may have missed)

• Never explain it fully (this is the absolute key here!)

Players will start asking. Who lit it. How long ago. Where did they go. You didn’t add a monster. You added pressure.

Empty rooms control pacing.

Too many fights and the game feels flat. Too many empty rooms with nothing in them and the game feels pointless. But empty rooms with purpose, that’s where tension builds. That’s where players start to feel watched, hunted, or just unsure.

And that’s what you want.

Because when something finally does happen, it lands harder.

One of the smartest things in the old books is not a combat rule.

It is advice.

The Player’s Handbook says,

That is dead right.

Then it pushes even harder and tells players to leave discovery to actual adventuring, because

That is wisdom.

Not just old game advice. Real advice for how this stuff works at the table.

A lot of games get flatter once everybody knows too much. Every monster is known. Every trick is known. Every magic item gets measured before it gets touched. People stop poking at the world and start managing it. That kills something. It kills that little pause when the party hears a sound behind the door and nobody is sure what comes next.

That pause matters.

I think AD&D understands that better than people give it credit for. The books were not trying to hide information just to be jerks. They were protecting discovery. That is different. If the players do not know every answer yet, then the dungeon still has teeth. The world still has weight. A rumor can still feel important. A weird object can still feel weird.

And honestly, this goes past books.

A DM does not need to explain every corner of the setting. You do not need to tell the players what every cult believes, how every ruin was built, what every symbol means, or what sits on level four before they get there. Let some of it sit in the dark. Let them earn it. Let them be wrong for a while. That is good for the game. Maybe better than good.

Because once players know that not everything is handed to them, they start acting different. They ask better questions. They test things. They listen. They take notes. They stop assuming the world exists to explain itself on command.

That is where the game starts to feel alive.

There is another part in the Player’s Handbook that hits too. It says the game is demanding for players and Dungeon Masters alike, and the rewards are vast. That feels true. The reward is not just treasure or levels. The reward is that moment when the group figures something out because they were careful, or lucky, or bold, and not because the book or the DM just gave it away.

I like that a lot.

It reminds me that mystery is not the enemy of play. Mystery is part of play.

Too much explanation makes the game smaller. Too much certainty makes it feel solved. And AD&D, at its best, does not want to feel solved. It wants to feel like you are walking into something bigger than you, with half a torch, bad information, and just enough nerve to keep going.

That’s good wisdom.

Maybe one of the best bits in the whole stack of books.

Let’s chat about encumbrance rules in AD&D and why they tend to fall apart once you actually use them. On paper, it sounds right. Track every coin, every torch, every piece of gear. Keep things grounded. Make weight matter. It feels like it should create tension.

At the table, it usually turns into something else. Someone is counting coins. Someone else is asking how much a rope weighs. You stop the game to check a number. Then you check another number. Movement rates shift. Suddenly the focus is not the dungeon. It is the sheet.

I have seen this happen more than once. A group clears a room, finds treasure, and instead of moving forward, everyone pauses. “Can we carry this?” “Who has space?” “Do we drop something?” Ten minutes later, nothing has changed in the world. The players are still standing in the same room, just with a different set of numbers written down.

The rules seem to aim for realism. That part is clear. Weight should matter. Resources should matter. But the way it plays out often feels like bookkeeping. You are not making interesting choices. You are managing inventory.

And it gets worse the more detailed you try to be. Copper pieces alone can break the flow. Hundreds of coins. Converting weights. Figuring out who carries what. It adds friction at the exact moment the game should be pushing forward.

So the question becomes simple. What was the goal, and is the rule actually doing that job?

Because if the goal is tension, there are faster ways to get it. If the goal is meaningful choice, there are cleaner ways to force it. And if the goal is to make the dungeon feel dangerous, stopping the game every few minutes to do math does the opposite.

This episode looks at that gap. What the rule promises. What it actually delivers. And what you can do instead if you still want weight to matter without turning your session into a ledger.

It’s that time again, where I find a prompt from the Donjon site and see what I can do with it. Today was a prophecy:

Prophecies: Upon the second day of the reign of Faith, when the Gate of Glass is opened, the Mirror of Witchcraft shall be lost.

This one made me look.. and then look again. Its interesting. Its funny because prophecies in games is like handing someone a knife, but not telling them which side is up and they’ll have to figure out the way to use it to cut.

Hmm..

Thinking about the timing first. “Second day of the eight of Faith” ← countdown? Some will claim something? a throne? Somehow need to make sure the players get this. They need to feel pressure of the time moving forward. The reign of Faith needs to be in motion as they arrive onto the scene. Maybe… MAYBE a coronation is happening, about to happen or is in motion? nods Yes that will work.

The Gate of Glass. It needs to be defined.

I would make it an actual location. What could it be? Maybe a giant crystal arch, in a ruins under a palace somewhere? A place forgotten by most, except save for a Cleric or two. nods Yes, that’ll do.

Players can go there. Players can open it. If they do, something happens? If they wait, someone else will.

The Mirror of Witchcraft is the cost. Or the bait? I would not explain it up front, why would I?

Someone wants it gone. Someone else would kill for it. Maybe the mirror shows true names? Maybe it steals years off a life? Either way, if the mirror disappears, someone profits.

I imagine the party standing in a crystal chamber, torchlight bouncing, and the gate flaring open. A black-robed figure waits on the other side with a hand out. Face obscured but he shadows, but he smiles, not a smile they can see, but they can feel. This is exactly how he planned it. The players can fight, run, or bargain. Every choice hurts someone. That is the right tension. nods

I like that this prophecy tempts them to solve it. They will want to find the mirror or stop the loss. But maybe the best move is to leave it alone. That is the trap.

I am not sure I would make the prophecy true in a literal way. Players should decide how it lands. Maybe the mirror is only lost if they open the gate. Maybe the prophecy was a lie to get them to do it. That is better play.

Eh.. that’s just what I was thinking… how say you?

Some of the fun of solo roleplaying is not even the play. It is the setup. It is grabbing a book, getting hit with an idea, building a character, sketching out a world, and feeling that little spark kick on. I do this a lot. More than I probably should. I will get everything lined up just right, get excited about the whole thing, and then when it is time to actually sit down and play, the mood is gone. Just gone. That happens more than I like to admit.

Okay, today is a just thinking mind exercise… I discovered this treasure map maker, and my mind went crazy. I like stuff like this because it gives you a little taste, enough to make you start to want to know more. Right?

First glance.. it looks like a straight treasure path and kind of boring. It looks too clean to be honest. Running as it is, would be boring. It’s honestly not enough, it needs a lot more. Luckily this is why we do these posts, to explore HOW we can do more, right?

So I stop looking at it like a treasure map and start looking at it like a pressure map.

The first thing that matters is that one location is marked in red and says “See Invisible”. That tells me the map is lying by omission. The red mark is not treasure. It is a tool. Maybe a warning? Or both? ‘Whoever’ made this (yes I know its a random prompt on his site, but I am getting into the mind of the map-maker!) did not think the hidden thing mattered less than the dragon or the mine. They thought it mattered more. Enough to mark it in another color.

That changes the whole use of the map.

So the party has this map, where do they start?

Do they go to the red mark first because it sounds useful. Or do they ignore it because it does not sound like loot?

A lot of groups will ignore it. They hear Dragon’s Lair and Dwarf’s Mine?

Gold. Magic. Action.

So the best part of the map is the part that looks least exciting.

Good. That is useful.

I would make the red location a dangerous side site, not a free buff. Maybe an old shrine where one character can gain the effect for a short time, but only by giving up something real. Blood. Sight in one eye for a day. A memory. A spell slot permanently burned until the curse is lifted. Something mean enough that the players have to stop and think. If they take it, they can see the real trails, the hidden guardians, the false stones, the invisible bridge in the ruins, the dragon’s veiled hoard, all of it. If they refuse, they can still play the map straight, but now they are doing it blind.

That is better already. Oh yes, this is coming together!

Oh yes, before I forget, the dotted lines matter too.

Most groups see lines and think certainty. I would not use them that way. I would treat each dotted route as the safest known route, not the only route. Safe is not the same as good. The safe road takes time. Time means torches, rations, wandering monsters, weather, patrols, rival treasure hunters.

Now the unsafe routes cut distance, but invite other trouble.

Quicksand. Old warding stones. Goblin tolls. A cursed battlefield. Stuff you can choose to risk instead of stuff that just happens to you.

That is where the map starts becoming a game.

Let’s say the party finds this map on a dead body. They know someone wanted these sites linked. They do not know why. They take the known trail toward the Dragon’s Lair because it is marked and because they trust maps too much. Two days in, they lose a mule, burn through extra food, and get seen by the dragon’s outer watchers. They reach the lair tired. That matters. They chose certainty and paid in time.

Another group sees the same map and says no, the Ruins of Ash sit closer by eye, we cut cross country. Fine. Now they save a day and arrive with more supplies, but one hireling falls into an ash sink and breaks a leg, and the group reaches the ruins without the See Invisible clue. They miss the hidden stair and conclude the ruins are empty. They are not empty. They are just unreadable to people who chose speed over information.

That is the kind of thing I want from a map. Not directions. Tradeoffs.

The tavern on the map is what really interests me though. The Wench’s Goblet looks harmless. It is the only social site on the page. That makes players relax. That is exactly why I would make it filthy with motive. Somebody there buys information from failed adventurers. Somebody there sells watered rumors to fresh ones. Somebody there wants the mine reopened because dead dwarves are easier to profit from than living ones. Maybe the innkeeper quietly pushes parties toward the dragon because every dead group leaves gear behind and never comes back to claim it.

That is the darker use of a map like this. Every marked place is not just a location. It is a mouth. It wants something. It needs feeding. Character’s can provide that food, yes?

That is how I would use a random map like this. Not as content already finished. As a machine that makes bad choices expensive and useful choices ugly.

That is enough for a game.

You’ve likely encountered the rule that equates one real day to one campaign day. It sounds logical, suggesting order and grounding. However, in practice, it disrupts the flow of the game.

Time works against you. A party completes a dungeon and returns to town, but the real world clock halts progress. Weeks of in-game activity stretch into real weeks without reason. It may suggest consistency, but it creates friction and makes the world feel less alive.

In this episode, I explore the origins of this rule and its breakdown in actual play. I discuss its impact on pacing, the constraints it imposes on DMs, and why even the game’s creators didn’t treat it as rigid. If you’ve felt time in your campaign doesn’t align with your game’s actual flow, this episode is worth your time.

I got this prompt from Donjon’s site. I was think when looking at, its really interesting, but 9 days? That seems a bit tight, don’t’cha think?

Traveling alone can eat that mostly up… heck if you happen upon something that distracts you for a moment, that’s more time taken away, right?

Thoughts going through my mind about the distance, how far is the Desert of Brass from any outpost? How long can they survive there with out resupplies.

The idea of pillars of arcane fire is kind of interesting but it needs stakes.

I have questions that run around.

Why does Eurysis care?

Why does he want them gone or investigated?

Who is going to profit if the party fails?

Another Cleric? A rival?

Is someone waiting in the shadows for the party to mess up?

I picture the players hearing this offer in a hot stone courtyard. Eurysis nervous. He will pay well but only for speed. He mentions the nine-day limit like it is sacred. He does not explain why.

That is the hook.

The party can ask him, but he only gives pieces of information and very vague. The less they know, the more they must risk guessing.

I would track every day. I would track each water skin.

A sandstorm comes into play?

That delays them and could put them three days behind. They can push the camels harder. Or give them a choice of they can rob a desert shrine for a shortcut map from rumors they heard along the way. That choice is where the evil slant creeps in. Take the shortcut and desecrate something. Save time but invite consequences.

If I run it darker, I would let the deadline mask another truth. Maybe Eurysis needs the party to trigger the fire before a ritual. If they succeed, he profits. If they fail, he blames them and walks away richer anyway. Players start to see this only if they dig too deep.

I also wonder if nine days is too generous?

Yes, this is just random thoughts I have about ideas when I see them.

There is a mean little idea in this journal, and I like it a lot. It starts with one thought. What if the danger is not in the room, but in what an NPC tells the party to do??

Hey everyone, it’s the end of another week and here is everything that’s been going on. It’s a lite week as I was having some health issues that I had to take care of first before the fun to keep going. So I apologize for the lack of posting. Anyhow, I did manage to keep up with getting my podcast out for y’all. Enjoy!

Things this week

Unearthed Arcana has always felt like one of those AD&D books that arrives with a lot of confidence. It does not ease its way in. It shows up and more or less tells you that the game has grown, the new material is official, and this is where things stand now. That may sound exciting, and sometimes it is. Still, I think that confidence is part of what makes the book so interesting to talk about. Once a book starts calling itself official and final, you cannot help but ask whether it really earned that status, or whether it simply carried the right logo on the cover.

Reading through it now, what stands out to me is how much of Unearthed Arcana feels like AD&D trying to become more of itself. More race detail. More class material. More weapons. More spells. More rules. More little moving parts. Some of that appears to come from real creative energy. You can feel that. There is a sense that the game world is expanding and that somebody genuinely believed all this extra material would make campaigns richer. I get the appeal. When you first crack open a book like this, especially back then, it probably felt like striking gold.

But more is not always better. That is really where I land on the whole thing. AD&D already had enough subsystems, exceptions, and strange little corners to keep a referee busy for a long time. It was never a light game. So when Unearthed Arcana piles more onto the table, I do not think the right question is whether the material is official. I think the better question is whether any of it actually helps your campaign breathe. Does it make the game sharper. Does it make choices more interesting. Does it give the referee something useful. Or does it just create more weight, more pages to flip through, more little rules to remember on a night when you are already trying to keep six players, a dungeon, and a wandering monster check moving along.

And that is probably why Unearthed Arcana still gets people talking. It is not a dead book. It is a book that pushes back. Some parts may suggest real growth. Other parts feel like clutter dressed up as progress. I do not think it ruined AD&D, and I do not think it saved it either. What it really did, at least to me, was expose a fault line that was already there. One side of the game wanted more codified answers and more official structure. The other side wanted a strong foundation and room to run. Unearthed Arcana leans hard into the first idea. Whether that works for you is likely to say more about your table than it does about the book itself.
