Regardless of which direction you go, I think the key is a series of balanced, equally cryptic nuggets of information that get discovered and must be interpreted without any context or explanation in making the choice. The trap need not be immediate, either. Perhaps action alone is the trap, with each path leading to quests of different flavors, either being pulled into a larger prophecy because of their action, or having to right a wrong they caused through making a poor choice.
