Great commentary, it's interesting that when playing between Basic and Advanced editions, the former encumbrance rules are considered too simplistic and the latter too complex, maybe they should meet somewhere in the middle, personally I think slot encumbrance is a good idea and there are many examples of it.
My DM of the day thought AD&D was not complex enough and wanted to include "size" (dimensions), to emphasize bulkiness, although I seem to recall some of the weights of items were also trying to represent bulk as well.
