Appendix N is doing something most games never try: admitting the game is downstream of a specific literary tradition and pointing you at it. You can't fully run 1e the way Gygax intended without having read some of that list.

Yes exactly! I remember when I was junior high and my English teacher was using this list as inspirational fantasy reading. Found out he was a D&D player lol

I love the spirit and totally agree about the potentiality of the rules. But, I have a complaint. You don't know if you'll ever use the disease table? It's right there in the rules, telling you to use the disease table. Sure, it says, "Each game month you may wish to check..." Just do the checks. The term "may" is just Gary being polite. Do the checks, and you'll be using the table soon enough. Then you get the fun of naming the random affliction. Oh no, Sorceror Slim, you've got the droopsy and the hawking gobets.

lol I’ve had them used on me in games I’ve played in. NGL, my current group would probably cry, minus one or two guys. Last night I had a Ghast in my game, and I could see various players literally sitting there pissed off, because they were paralyzed. like arms crossed, 5 year old style. I look forward to seeing what happens when they meet that wight. lol

1e doesn’t care if you have fun. It cares if you survive. Can confirm. This post is gold.
