Totally on board with this episode, I do think the fighter deserves more and the rules from Unearthed Arcana did supplement the class, most games I played the fighter got some house rules to emphasise combat abilities, in particular the one suggested at the bottom of page 74 on the DMG which boosts the fighter attack progression.
My introduction to AD&D back in the late 80s (v2) was as a fighter. We played a campaign over a number of years, getting together weekly and then monthly. I made some friendships during that time that have endured nearly 40 years, so I have a soft spot for the muscle-head class. I must get back into the game again!
sounds like you had a great time. All of the people I originally started playing with have passed on or quit the hobby. I still am in touch with my original DM that started everything for me. Guy still plays to this day, AD&D.

yes! and a lot of people either forget (or didn’t read) the little tiny blurb on page 25 of the PHB..
“…. All of these creatures entitle a fighter to attack once for each of his or her experience levels (See COMBAT).”
